We have a Film School for Teenagers and a Film Making Club for adults. See the bottom of this post for details.

Last Saturday the Film Club worked on the auto-cue. This is the system used by News-Readers and Weather People where you see them facing the camera and talking word perfect. and also used on Chat-Shows. It often means that the script is pre-written and can be checked out for accuracy before being broadcast.

We wrote a spoof news-script, set up the auto-cue and filmed each other in front of a green-screen. It does take some practise and rehearsalo but here is a clip meshed together of the group. As English is second language for several this shows how an auto-cue ca really help.

The script is written on a tablet and placed horizontally in front of the auto-cue. The camera is placed behind with the lens directly behind a one-way 45 degree mirror. The app allows us to alter the speed, size and colour of the text and background colour. And this can be controlled manually. Sometimes just prompts are used and the presenter can expand on them. The secret is to talk naturally and this can be difficulot for the beginners but after a few rehearsals it becomes more more like a normal conversation.

We used a green-screen background so that we ca add a suitable background when editing. In this case we’ll probably use a News Desk type background. Its important that the presenter does wear any green clothing as this will disappear with the gree when editing!!

Those who took part really enjoyed using this equipment either as the presenter or camera person. We are getting used to the equipment each week and the plan is to write some short scripts and play them out. These may be in the studio or out and about Swansea. If you are interested in joining this FREE group then text or Whatsapp on 07964 827959. We have moved into a new studio. It doesn’t matter what you want to do, act, present, work behind the camera, make props of just make the coffees or come for a chat, everyone is welcome.
